A Focused Conference on One Particle

HIGGS 2024 gathered the LHC experiments and the theory community at Uppsala University from 4 to 8 November 2024 for the year's review of the Higgs sector: measurements of the boson's properties, Higgs pair production, searches for new physics in the scalar sector, and the theoretical developments in and beyond the Standard Model. It ran its programme on HEPCon.

At 101 talks from 92 speakers in 41 sessions it is the most compact programme among the physics conferences in the app, and it shows what the app does at that scale: the same offline timetable, search, personal schedule and materials that a thousand-contribution congress gets, without the density.

Two Streams, Organised by Question

The plenaries opened in the larger hall, and the parallel programme — two sessions at a time in the two halls — was organised by the questions the field is asking: precision Higgs measurements and calculations, BSM Higgs physics, Higgs physics at future colliders, and Higgs boson pairs and the Higgs potential. Each stream ran as a numbered series across the days, so following one question through the week meant following one session title in the app.

Fika Included

The timetable came through as the organizers wrote it, Swedish coffee breaks and all: the sessions between the talks are called Fika in the app, because that is what they were called in Indico. It is a small thing that says something larger about the sync — the programme in attendees' pockets is the organizers' programme, not a reformatted copy of it.

Materials and Offline Access

99 talk materials were attached to contributions over the week, readable on the phone. The whole programme was cached on first open, so it was available on the way in from the airport in November as it was in the halls.

Synced from Indico

The programme stayed in Indico. HEPCon read the timetable, speakers, rooms and materials from it and re-read them as the schedule moved, so the organizers maintained one programme. A late change reached installed phones as a background update.

The Challenge

  • • Serve a focused 101-talk programme offline with the same product a flagship gets
  • • Keep two parallel question-organised streams easy to follow across the week
  • • Carry the speakers' materials into the app with the talks
  • • Sync from Indico without the organizers maintaining a second programme

The Solution

HEPCon synced HIGGS 2024 from its Indico timetable — 41 sessions, 101 talks, speakers, rooms and 99 attached materials — and served it offline in Uppsala, with full-programme search, speaker pages and a personal schedule across the two parallel streams.

The Results

  • 101 talks from 92 speakers in 41 sessions served across two parallel streams
  • 99 talk materials attached and readable offline
  • Programme delivered exactly as the organizers wrote it in Indico, Fika included
